This year Kiki McDonough is celebrating 25 years of success in the fine jewellery business.
Her personal trademark style of using vib
rant semi precious stones in unique and daring colour combinations has ensured her consistent success and international recognition. Kiki McDonough is now recognised as one of Britain’s most desirable brands in the luxury sector. Kiki continually strives to provide new pieces of stylish jewellery that can be worn anywhere. Her collections consist of bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings and cufflinks, all of which add a touch of glamour no matter what the occasion. This year also sees the arrival of the Kiki McDonough e‐commerce site:
Company History
Kiki McDonough first began selling jewellery via a small concession in a friend’s shop in 1985. Following moves to Elizabeth Street in 1989 and Walton Street in 1992, her designs are now housed in a light, airy store just off Sloane Square on Symons Street, where Kiki has been based for the past 3 years.
The third generation of her family to work in the jewellery trade, Kiki has eschewed the hushed, imposing interiors of the antique jewellery shops that filled her childhood. Her store on Symons Street, which is all clean white lines and beautifully polished display cases, perfectly reflects the modernity and elegance that characterises each piece of Kiki’s jewellery.
Since its humble beginnings (the first of Kiki’s designs to make it to production was a pair of heart‐shaped crystal earrings topped with gold bows) the business has grown ten‐fold. The current range falls into three distinctive collections comprising around 400 different pieces. Though her designs have varied in style, cost and composition over the years, Kiki has always aimed to provide wearable and beautiful jewellery at an affordable price. Indeed, it was this gap in the market that inspired her to start designing in the first place.
Perhaps the most pivotal moment in the growth of the business came just a year after its inception, when Sarah Ferguson chose to wear a pair of Kiki McDonough earrings for her engagement to Prince Andrew. With Princess Diana soon joining the ranks of Kiki’s most notable regular customers, the brand quickly developed a well‐earned reputation for true British quality.
25 years on, the business has continued to grow in volume, profitability and profile despite the coming and going of trends and the instability of the economic climate. The longevity of Kiki’s designs has been officially recognised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, which has a pair of her iconic earrings on permanent display in their modern jewellery collection.
And for the next 25 years of business? Kiki sees “more ideas, more colour, and maintaining my reputation for wearable and beautiful jewellery’”.
Kiki McDonough
A mother, wife and business woman, Kiki McDonough knows all too well the challenges of dressing for every occasion. Her busy and varied lifestyle is one that she shares with many women, and has contributed in part to the style of her jewellery, which she specifies “has to go with everything and go everywhere”.
First encouraged to start designing by her husband and a friend, Kiki is now regarded as one of the most eminent designers of British jewellery. As a pioneer in the use of daring colour combinations and semi‐precious stones, Business Age Magazine credits Kiki with having changed the face of the fine jewellery industry. Kiki, whose favourite stone is Peridot, describes her own style as “bold with an edge of chic” and attributes her inspiration to myriad sources.
Her customers, her lifestyle and the costumes and colour of the ballet are just some of the starting points that have fuelled her imagination and led to the creation of beautiful pieces of jewellery. Kiki is on the Development Board of Th
e English National Ballet School and has sat on the Boards of Honeypot Homes and the Starlight Foundation, both of which she still supports. Kiki lives at home in Battersea with her husband, Randle Siddeley the landscape designer and her two teenage sons.
